Don’t we all wish pet blogging could be our career? Today I’m going to reveal the pet blogger survey results which show us that it’s possible to make money blogging.
I recently hosted a pet blogger survey, where I asked bloggers a series of questions. There were two parts: about the bloggers and their blogs, and then about blogging revenue. The survey received 59 responses.
Today I’m sharing with you the results.
ABOUT THE BLOGGERS AND THEIR BLOGS
These results show us that a high percentage of pet bloggers (46%) have been blogging for 4 years or more, which is pretty amazing. On the other hand, 18 % are newbies who have been blogging for less than a year.
These results are really surprising for me. From the pet blogs I’ve visited, it always seems like there are more Blogger blogs than WordPress blogs. Seems that I was wrong and WordPress is the number 1 blogging platform for pet bloggers.
A blog’s success is not measured by pageviews, but it’s an indicator to keep in mind if you want to grow your blog and earn an income from it. Even though most pet blogs have 10.000 or less monthly pageviews (70%), a surprising 12% have more than 50.000 pageviews a month! This is pretty amazing and a proof that pet blogs can have huge traffic.
Social media and blog commenting are the most popular ways of driving traffic to pet blogs, followed by search engine optimization. Email marketing doesn’t seem to be very popular among pet bloggers.
With social media and search engines constantly evolving and with every algorithm change, blogging gurus say that having a great list of subscribers can guarantee reliable traffic, without being at the mercy of the search engines. I haven’t followed this advice either, but I plan to invest in growing my newsletter subscriber list in the next few months.
BLOGGING REVENUE
Even though a significant percentage (68%) of pet bloggers make less than $99 a month (including me), 25% make between $100 and $499, 2% make between $500 and $999, and 5% make between $1.000 and $9.999.
These results may seem discouraging, but I don’t think they are. We can’t forget that some pet bloggers don’t want to monetize their blogs or haven’t tried it yet. For those of us who would like to earn an income from our pet blog I think that the fact that 5% of bloggers make between $1.000 and $9.999 a month is a huge motivation.
Pet bloggers have several revenue streams, with sponsored posts, affiliate networks and advertising networks being the most popular. On the other hand, only a small percentage of bloggers makes money from consulting, pet modelling, guest appearances or books/eBooks.
Sponsored posts is the most profitable revenue stream by far and I think this doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Most pet blogs I visit usually publish sponsored posts on a regular basis and besides Blogpaws has been doing a great job linking brands and pet bloggers together.
This last question was a subjective one and some bloggers commented that they didn’t know how to answer because even though they didn’t make money they were still quite satisfied with their blogs. When I decided to include this question in the survey I meant the overall success of your blog according to your blogging goals. Anyway, it seems most bloggers are satisfied or very satisfied with the success of their blog.
SURVEY RESULTS SUMMARY
- 46% of pet bloggers have been blogging for 4 years or more;

- 70% of pet blogs have 10.000 or less monthly pageviews;
- Social media and blog commenting are the most popular ways of driving traffic to pet blogs;
- 68% of pet bloggers make less than $99 a month;
- 5% of pet bloggers make between $1.000 and $9.999 a month;
- Sponsored posts, affiliate networks and advertising networks are the most popular revenue streams;
- Sponsored posts is the most profitable revenue stream;
- Most pet bloggers are satisfied with the success of their blog.
And that’s it!
